Community Events

  • Community Parade to School 
  • SURFS Assemblies celebrate student achievements, Mac’s Got Talent student performances, new siblings of current students (with books for big brothers and sisters to read to their baby) and community members
  • Monthly family meetings in Spanish
  • Regular visits by local and state leaders (including Mayor Florsheim, former Mayor Giuliano, Senator Murphy, Lt. Governor Bysiewicz, Governor Lamont and Education Commissioner Cardona)
  • Pre-COVID extra events: Ice cream social, No screen fun night, Valentine’s dance, BINGO night, Movie night, Pasta dinner, Book giveaway

Awards & Recognition

2021: For five years in a row, a Macdonough student has been recognized at the state-level in an InvestWrite essay contest, and this year a Macdonough fourth grader placed ninth in the nation! Read about the student, the award, and our STEM TAG teacher here. Two separate student teams at Macdonough win first place in the Stock Market Game in CT (again!). 

2020: Fifth grader recognized as a state finalist in the Letters About Literature competition. Three Macdonough students win first place in CT for The Stock Market Game. Macdonough student wins first place in CT in the InvestWrite competition.

2019: Mac students come in first place in The Stock Market Game and the InvestWrite Competition and three are finalists at CT’s Invention Convention. Macdonough’s Rubiks Cube team, “Macdonough Cubed,” wins first in Connecticut for division 1 (kindergarten through grade five) teams, by solving 25 3×3 Rubik’s Cubes in 4 minutes, 43 seconds. Macdonough fifth grader who places first in the individual competition is featured on the local news.

Special School Activities

  • After-school activities: garden club, Mad Science, basketball, chess club, art club, Makerspace, Girls on the Run, Circus Skills, Unified Sports, Coding, Rubik’s Cube, Lego Robotics, Horseback riding (by invitation)
  • Raffle prizes for positive student behavior offer chances for students for students to connect with staff. For example:
    • Pancakes with the Principal at O’Rourke’s
    • Cards with the shark (Mr. Reardon)
    • Soccer with Mr. Ferrero
    • Glitter Jars with Ms. Z
    • Lunch with a Teacher of Your Choice
