STEM AT MACDONOUGH

Students at Macdonough School are exposed to interdisciplinary units of study that have at their foundation a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

Students are provided the opportunity to become independent learners and thinkers through Project-Based Learning.

All of our projects focus on the Engineering Design Process in order to solve real-world problems.

Engineer of the Month

Our Engineer of the Month is Sofia from Ms. Jukins’ third grade class! Sofia has been name the our Engineer for the Month of January because she practices the skills of a real life engineer. For example, Sofia uses the Engineering Design Process to carefully brainstorm and plan ideas during science investigations. She practices her presentation skills by being confident to read and ask professionals in the STEM field interview questions. Sofia carefully listens to her peers to integrate everyone’s opinion for the final product and presentation. Sofia is always asking questions, using critical thinking skills, and engaged in her STEM work. Keep up the great work, Sofia!

Invention Convention/Science Fair for ALL 4th and 5th Grade Macdonough Students

Lauren Mikulak and John Ferrero are teaming up to support all 4th and 5th grade students participate in either the 2022 Connecticut Invention Convention (4th grade) or the 2022 Macdonough School Science Fair (5th grade). All students will be asked to participate and will be provided support during the school day. We are asking all students to complete the majority of their project at home. Ms. Mikulak will be meeting will all 4th and 5th grade students the week of 1/10/22 to answer all questions as well as to provide families with further information and expectations. Stay tuned!!

Produce of the Month: GRAPEFRUIT!

January is the time for citrus. While citrus is not grown in Connecticut, the citrus we get from Florida is in season in the winter time. Additionally, citrus is rich in Vitamin C which can help boost your immune system! This month, students will be getting grapefruit for snack several times.
